Anyway here we go again, this travesty prompted me to begin again, lol!
Sweeny Todd
So dark, so dirty, so bloody, so blah!
I was so excited about this one. I never made it into the theater to see it due to a fear of being overwhelmed with big screen blood, and boy am I glad that I just watched it at home! In my opinion this film failed, as in flat out fell on it’s face and here’s why:
The Singing: While Jonny has a rather lovely voice, ever female singing in the movie failed to enunciate a single word. So rather than being entertained with the nuances of the lyrics, one just wished that the annoying warbling about would stop.
The Music: Rather than having a theme that leaves one humming after the movie, I was actually bored during the movie with the two pedantic and repetitive themes. This is one musical from which I honestly have no interest in finding any songs and hearing them again.
The Plot: We all know that a good plot is driven by a bond with the characters through the expression of emotion and motivation. This movie lacked any depth of emotion and simply focused on the gleeful overuse of fake blood. I still have no idea why Todd decided to start killing everyone as opposed to just his original targets, maybe it was explained in the lyrics that weren’t enunciated earlier…..
Basically I found this movie to be overly pretentious with an excessive focus on blood and filth. I love a dark movie, and rarely find a Tim
My recommendation: Skip it. It’ll probably better edited for TV anyway.
