I finally got to see it. My opinion? It was beautiful. It had all the feel of an Orwellian novel or fight club, but without the dirt and the grunge. It was a mystery that still managed to maintain its integrity in the end. It's unusual that you see a movie with out your stereotypical Hollywood ending, yet the audience came out smiling.... Now for the specifics. Hugo Weaving did an awesome job of infusing a mask with personality and emotion. Natalie Portman actually managed to convey angst and other emotions with out seeming cheesy. The Wachowski brothers might have actually made up for the Matix sequels... The script balanced on the brink of being freakishly loquacious and trying almost too hard to be complex and deep. I think that the beauty of this movie really lies in it's ability to take chances that may come off ridiculous and cheesy and still maintain it's dignity. So unusual. The action sequences were not overdone, and seemed within some range of actual human ability. The plot seemed fresh in a time of sequels, yet still had echoes that could be felt in not only the totalitarian themed books of the past, but our own political situation as well. Do I think that this movie was made as a political statement about the Bush administration? No, I don't. I think that if that is all that you get out of this movie, then that is sad. If you think that this movie is simply supporting terrorism, grow up and get your head out of your ass. If you can't figure out that there are two sides to every story, and that a government is as capable of terrorism as small groups of extremists, well, I don't think that you should be reading my ideas :)
Anyway, my suggestion, go see it in the theater. Then, once you've had a chance to think about it, go see it again. This movie was made for the theater and it would be a shame to miss it in its grandiose form. Not to mention that you will just have to appreciate what may actually be the longest use of alliteration ever. :) enjoy!
